This is because it is being killed by butternut canker, a virulent fungus that is thought to be imported.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" src=\"http:\/\/forestar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/butternut_2052_sm-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63\" title=\"butternut\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forestar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/butternut_2052_sm-1.jpg 450w, https:\/\/forestar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/butternut_2052_sm-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Living butternut trees cannot legally be cut or harmed without a permit unless they have been assessed by a Butternut Health Assessor (BHA) and judged to be \u201cnon-retainable.\u201d A permit is required for any activities that might affect the health of a butternut that has been judged to be \u201cretainable.\u201d Good information on butternut is available from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fgca.net\/conservation\/sar\/butternut.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forest Gene Conservation Association<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Assessment:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Butternut may affect a proposed project (e.g., building permit application, development project, quarry operation) and the proponent must determine if butternut are on site. The first issue is whether the \u201cpotential butternut\u201d are actually protected butternut rather than unregulated Carpathian (English) walnut, heartnut, their hybrids or black walnut. A Butternut Assessment is required if a regulated tree will be affected by the proposed activity. Verifying whether a tree is a true butternut, whether it is retainable and if it may be affected by a proposed activity determines whether it must be assessed, and if a permit is required. Mistakes can become very expensive.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Identification<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Distinguishing butternut from related exotic species and hybrids can be very challenging and the implications of mistakenly identifying other species and hybrids as butternut can add many thousands of dollars in costs and cause significant delays.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Williams &amp; Associates staff includes BHAs who are experienced foresters and arborists with background in Environmental Impact Assessment and the development process .\u00a0 We can inspect sites to<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Determine if there are butternut on the site<\/span><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Determine if they will be affected by an activity<\/span><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Assess Butternut that may be affected<\/span><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Make recommendations for retention or mitigation<\/span><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Develop and implement mitigation plans<\/span><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Help work through the permit process<\/span><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Butternut has been listed as Nationally Endangered by Environment Canada (2005) and as Endangered by Ontario.
